Please note that Patron wishes to give MWS an appreciation dinner in good efforts of Mirificus 10.

We initially planned it on 29 Jan, but due to some circumstances, we decided to put it next week.

The date and place will be confirmed by the patron again.

In the meantime, a stock check will be conducted by this weekend on MWS instrumentation.

Heyas all,

I hope you have enjoyed yesterday's concert despite the hiccups and busyness in both preparations and actual day.

Mr YC Lee, our patron express his gratitude for the good job well done as he and his wife has tremendously enjoyed the concert.

Mr Jason De Hamel sincerely thank us for hosting them and giving the Loyang Band a wonderful concert experience.

Good work MWS Musicians, I know all of you have worked hard in either ticketing or practising your parts.

Please have a good rest and I will keep all of you updated soon on upcoming events.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few person:

Mr Shaun Soh - The Executor of this concert and seeing to what the concert needs.

(Thank you for sending me almost everywhere to get things done and putting up with my nonsense)

Ms Bai Yanling - The "man" of this concert, doing alot of my arrowing and running about in heels (sorry =X)

(Thank you for the calls and sms es despite you managing school also)

Mr Ashley Chong - My designer, the man behind all the art works on the poster, programme booklet and the Certificate of Appreciation.

Greetings all,

For those who have not recieved the email below, please take note.

Also, adding on, would like to announce that band practise will resume on this following Sunday, 12 Jul 2009, From 1pm to 4 pm at Toa Payoh South Community Club #02-13.

The difference between this band practise resume and the official rehearsals is that sight reading and abit of working on the piece while official rehearsals are working on the set repertoire we are going to perform for 23 Aug 09.
Our Associate Conductors are looking at the band size below before deciding the repertoire which will be known to everyone before the rehearsals begin.

*Please note that there are 2 performance slots, 1030 – 1200 hrs & 1800 – 2000 hrs for 23 Aug 2009, kindly submit your availability to Joel @ jgmh30@singnet.com.sg as he is collating the list.
The resume of band practice is for players to pick up their momentum as well as a prelude for new players whom you guys have found during the retreat period.

Please let me know if you're bringing down any musicians as i need to check if we have sufficient instruments and for me to take note also.

For all members that have not read the mail sent, here it is:

Good Day To All,

Please be informed that there will no band practice until further notice.

In the meantime, those who wish to come down to practice, the room is still available for self practise use on Sundays.

For those who miss last sunday's practise, discussion of reforming the band was highlighted.

It was decided that the next 2 weeks will be used for recruitment.

I, alongside with Chairman ZhenQiang, as well as Ed, our current conductor, strongly encourage that all members to spread our recruitment verbally or via email to their musician friends, relatives and families.

I sincerely invite all musicians who are looking for a band to extend your sights, expose yourself to the many many wonderful repertoire and a band family to be in to join us humbly in our musical journey.

This years plans are currently out door based as we intend to expose ourselves to the community and publicize our melodious music to the public. They include CLAP, National Day Ceremony & a Christmas Concert.

Doing all these plans will further enhance our next year's activities of fund raising, indoor concert and an exchange visit to Australia.

Calling out to all members and/or netizens: If any of you have any photographs taken which are related to our previous concerts, or any paraphernalia (eg ticket stubs, concert posters, concert photographs etc) which you believe will be useful to document our past etc, kindly pass them to me during any band practice sessions.

FYI, Phase II will contain a list of all the performers for each concert - this will take up quite a bit of time on my side.

Heyas All,

Here to update according to the newsflash as well as to put up a notice.

All members, musicians, please note that practices would resume on 11 Jan 2009 this coming Sunday (1300-1600 hrs) @ TPSCC - room 02-13/14. We also welcome new members joinning our big family, so if you see any new faces, please usher them into the room.

If you have requested for the concert T-Shirt, kindly pay $16 bucks to Chairman Li ZQ if you haven't. ( Return ur debts before the CNY wo!)

Mirificus 08 Concert DVD/Audio Recording is out! If you would like to have a copy, kindly bring along a DVD this sunday and pay with a little patience will do.

This sunday we'll be sight reading a few pieces, so please take note of the scores distributed and help to return them to the librarian at the end of the practise.

Also, Section Leaders have been appointed with regards to the previous meeting that we have.

Happy New Year 2009 People!

So far, the next event coming up is a outing to East Coast Park this coming sunday 4th Jan 09. Meet at Parkway Parade Shopping Centre aka "Marine Parade Central" there, the one with the big big NTUC. If you have no idea how to get there, please ask Andy (me). Meeting time is at 11 am. This is a rough timing, i know quite alot of people will be late, but i will re arrange the timing accordingly after i know roughly who is going. If you are going, please drop me a sms at 9720 3600. Greetings, Andy here, bringing you the latest update of what's happening in our band.

First of all, hope you guys had a really fun time during Mirificus 08 and by now, have rest up; ready for the this festive season of X'mas & New Year.

To kick start this update, A reminder to all who have paid for the T-shirt, kindly collect them and make the payment to ZhenQiang. Best if you can do so this Sunday and help up with the spring cleaning too.

Free Publicity for NIE Concert: 27 Dec 2008, 1700 Hrs ( 5pm) at Nanyang Auditorium, NTU. Jie Yuan, ZhenQiang will be performing along side with others (Sorry if i missed ur name, save space =P) Cost is $5, if you still haven't get your ticket but is deciding to go, go get your ticket now! It's this coming Saturday.

To mark the coming of the New Year, there would be a spring cleaning session in the band room this coming Sunday, 28 Dec 2008 to clear up all the concert stuff as well as to clear up whatever that's been gathering, dust, hui chen, soil, dirt, blah blah blah... Time would tentatively be same as band practice, starting at 1pm. Do join us if you feel like making our band room a better place to practice in!! Even if you want to help but possess conditions like allergic to dust, don't worry there's plenty to do around. Appreciate your dearest support!

Next on the calendar before we welcome the New Year, would be a Post Concert Post X'mas Pre New Year celebration at ZhenQiang's house. The date is 29 Dec 2008 and more details will most likely be given soon, but would appreciate if you could get back to me ( or juz reply back this mail) whether you are able to attend this fun fill session "aka" the last bonding session before the New Year 09.

If you tink my next paragraph is on countdown, well sorry there is no countdown to be mentioned.

Instead, the first activity of 2009 is a biking/blading outing to East Coast Park on 4th January 2009. Band Practice is suppose to resume on that date, but we've decided to get some vitamin D (sunlight) so that we dun turn into vampires(pale pale white white) by staying indoors always :P Do join us. Don't worry about not being able to cycle or blade, there are always first time to everything.

Report at Lee Foundation Theater at 2.00pm. Please have your lunch before that.

Rehearsals will start at 2.30pm. Kindly report earlier to facilitate the movements of instruments and setting up of the hall stage so as to keep the rehearsal timing sharp.
This will enable rehearsal to start on time and end on time.

Rehearsals will hopefully end by 4.30pm and all of us can take a break at our dressing rooms.
Around 17.15 - 17.30 ( 5.15pm - 5.30pm) dinner would be ready, please collect it and eat only at the dressing rooms.

Photo taking session will take place at 1815 (0615pm), so please style your hair and etc etc, blah blah blah. Place to meet for photo taking will be confirmed again.

Please standby for the concert at 1900 hrs & let the fun begin!

After the concert, please remember to sign the Concert Book, which will be with either Andy or Joanne, before you go off!
A night to remember for 15 years of music making, so please leave us something to look back on many years later.

*I need helpers for the day, to shift the instruments from CC to LFT and from LFT to CC back again. Any 1 interested?*

13 Dec 2008 Saturday 1400 – 2200 hrs Combined (Actual Concert)

These are the remaining band practices. Do Practice hard and we will have a good concert. Please also do confirm your names for the concert before Dec, as we do not have to have any mis-identity of the names. Please write your full name, (example dun write zhenqiang, write li zhenqiang). Attire would be black black black black (shirt - long sleeved for guys and at least 3/4 for gals, pants, leather shoes for guys and clog shoes for gals and black socks for guys). We would take a section photo for everyone before the commencement of the concert.

I have killed a few bugs in the members' list and have, upon approval by ZQ, put it up on the website.

1. Whether I have included all ACTIVE band members' names (inactive band members, please do not fret - your names are still in the database - I just haven't had the time to code the search members' functionality yet)

Additionally, if you wish to introduce yourselves on the website, please send me the descriptions of yourselves and I will do the rest. There is no word limit to what you wish to put up (and no obligation for you to put up anything) - and while there are no hard and fast rules as to what you can describe yourselves to be like, we at the IT squad will reserve the right to modify your text - mostly for grammar (the final version of the draft will be sent to you for approval before we put it up)...or even decide not put it up at all (reasons will be e-mailed to you).

Band Practice would resume on the 29 June 2008, this is held to be in view for preparations for the upcoming Mirificus 2008 and maybe the recording session for WMC 2009 3rd division (details would be released officially by the Dutch only from July 2008).

Dear members, we all have knowledge about the current episode regarding the imposter of WW (WestWinds).It is totally immature and uncalled for. However, I place my trust fully in the relevant Department Heads from both bands to resolve this issue.

That aside, we have to pay attention to the issue of attendances for practices and audience for the coming concert. For many years, the committee of this band has been working hard (and always will) to bring up the name of our band through concerts and public performances. As such, it is both a heartening and disheartening thing to see more members appearing for practices barely a month before the concert. While this is an issue that can only be solved by a member's commitment, attitude and discipline towards music, the Exco will also take steps to gently remind and yes, at times, plead with members to come for more practices.

We may be desperate and plead for your attendance at times, so please do bear this in mind that we are not paid to do this. We are doing this for the Love, YES, the Love of this band. Exco members will only do this because we want to see the band grow. Are u sharing the same Vision as us? Or have you got your Sundays pondering whether you should go for band because the day before your Vision was a musical escapade of Hunks and Babes at MOS/ZOUK? *smiles* The decision lies with the individual eventually.

To be honest, Im not any better, but at least Im trying to solve this problem by escaping from other less important commitments. Worldpeace? No, it isn't. (I'll tell you what's the meaning of Worldpeace later on.)

I would like to sincerely make a call to all members and guest players of MWS : Do try to come within your means for practices. Some of you are good as an individual and there's no doubt about it. However, we function as a BAND, we work as a BAND, and We need to progress together to improve. Hence, I PLEAD for your kind attendance. You feel me? =)

Now, time to lighten up and tell you abt " Worldpeace" as I had said earlier on. Im pretty sure you guys have watched Miss Universe or some Beauty pageant at one point of your life.(Can I call you a loser if you didn't watch it at least once?)Well, there's a Q&A session during one part of the show. If you notice, after answering the questions that were posed to them, they also added that they wanted "Worldpeace".

IF you think carefully, Worldpeace = Bullshit. When has there ever been Worldpeace?WHEN? Yes, its crude, but true. These Beauties are just saying it so that they could have higher chances of winning the coveted Crown. So, next time if you see me and i mention the word " Worldpeace" to you, do understand its true meaning. Til then, see you at Band practices and don't give us Worldpeace! Chill~!

Hello, as promised. Sorry, I'm just back. Sunburnt, exhausted, stinky after two weeks of dragging my carcass through the mud and sand and probably will be quoted in PIONEER magazine supporting ICT (sigh - yes for that crucial moment I sold my soul to the dark side), here is the e-mail exchange I had between the West Winds Advisor and myself.

Both my e-mail and the e-mail reply from her are dated 17 Feb 2008. The contents have been posted up in their entirety.

I am the head of the Toa Payoh South Community Centre - Moulmein Wind Symphony IT Squad. I feel that it is my responsibility to inform you that a poster or posters in our tagboard from people claiming to be members from your band (using the name WW_Member and WW_Elite and WW_Super) has come to our blog (http://mirificus.blogspot.com) to say that your band was better than ours in your tagboard and have made several childish remarks which potentially serve to create a rift between our members and yours..

Here is an example of the remarks made.

After all, anyone can claim to be from anywhere in cyberspace, especially so in tagboards. Just because people claim that they are from West Winds doesn't make them members of West Winds.

Thus, while I agree that it is a small matter, I wish to obtain an official e-mail from your band stating what you feel about people claiming to be your members to put down our band and "glorify" your own.

It is my guarantee to you that your reply email shall be posted in its entirety on our blog.

Thank you for your kind attention in reading this, and I wish you all the best for your performance in March this year.

Thank you for writing. We appreciate your feedback and if the situation was reversed, we will likely feel upset too. Like you wrote, anyone can claim to be a West Winder. Hence we need your help to trace the person down. I believe my webmaster - Bernard will be in touch with you to get the IP addresses so that we can help with the tracing.

Be assured that the person who posted these messages will be dealt with heavily and my end has no hesitation to lodge a police report if it turns out that the person is assuming our members' identity. We, at West Winds, do not condone such acts.

On our part - I will highlight to my band today (after rehearsal) that such an incident has taken place and that we will be to tracing the person down. Moving ahead I certainly hope this does not result in a tit-for-tat situation, as it will serve what the poster had in mind - to create animosity between our groups.

Our bands have no quarrel or conflict with each other and as fellow community bands we had always maintained a cordial relationship. It only serves to benefit all community bands if we exist in harmony and collectively improve the music standards in Singapore.

I was surfing the internet when I read an interesting article. Excerpt from Insane Polygons:

Why get upset over what people think about our english. Frankly speaking, it is what it is- singaporeans do speak a funny form of english and the singaporean accent is something we all have. If other people choose to laugh at it, so be it. It matters not.

Finally someone going by the moniker of eagleeyes has been visiting my blog quite regularly leaving behind many comments. Honestly, I appreciate it...The fact that the comments are rarely complimentary really matters not to me.

He doesn’t agree with me.

He thinks I am some stupid loser whiner who don’t know shit from sunshine.

He thinks I suck as a teacher.

Again it matters not to me. If he wants to vent and venting makes him feel better, then more power to him. Stupid stuff happens in life all the time and sometimes, you just have to learn that those stupid stuff- when you get right down to it, really matters not.

Take a chill pill, mates: -

1. Anyone can pretend to be anyone in the tagboard.
I've played in West Winds before, and although I've left the band last century (!), I still know quite a few of the people there. The band is made up of very good amateur and professional wind band players who will certainly not sully their own band's name by coming across to our blog to flame our band.

2. It is good to show pride for your band...
...but on the other hand, please do not put other bands down when people who say that they are from other bands come into our blog and slimeball us. And please refrain from using vulgarities of any sort to slimeball them - that's just playing to their level.

Instead, let us in the exco handle it. We are going to send an e-mail off to members from West Winds soon and tell them that someone or a group of people claiming to be from West Winds has been smearing their band's reputation by putting remarks of this sort, and ask them to issue a statement to put up on our blog in response. [In fact I am going to do so after I finish this blog posting]

Let the music we make in the next concert speak for itself.

In the meantime, to the temporary tagboard resident(s) signing off as WW_Elite, WW_Member and WW_Best (assuming you're from West Winds): thank you very much for your comments.

Our members know that we can always do better. On behalf of the Toa Payoh South Community Centre - Moulmein Wind Symphony, please send my best regards to the West Winds conductor, exco as well as members. I heard their version of Symphonia Hungarica early this year and I congratulate them for a job well done. Moulmein has much to learn from them and I hope that we will have a fruitful band exchange not too long into the future.

While at this, it is important to take note of the following to all members from Moulmein (and those of other wind bands) who are reading this:

The TPSCC-MWS exco takes a serious view of anyone who claims to be from Moulmein and uses our name to put other bands down in cyberspace. It has never, does not, and will never encourage such childish, destructive and foolish behaviour from our members and any bands who encounter such trolling behaviour is highly encouraged to report the matter to us as soon as it occurs.

Honestly, Karen's comments hav drawn a fair bit of a debate. That aside, there are a few things that i would like to highlight a few issues regarding the posting of individual pictures and other topics as well.

1. - Posting of individual member's passport photos

Frm verbal and online comments,most members think that it is not necessary to put individual pics.They would,however,prefer a group section's photo.My view?Well,putting up individual pics looks more like putting up deceased photos of a fatal concert mishap.Cheers~!

2. - Our band achievements as compared to other bands that SS mentioned about

Seriously speaking,our band have only served the community through performances.It's true we do not have any awards and medals and such.However, what we have, is a group of people who are committed to seeing this band improving and thus achieving significant awards someday. All this can happen, if people are willing to put in effort.A little effort from ALL,is all it takes.

3. - Commitment does not need to come in the form of putting individual pictures

I do not comprehend SS's idea regarding this.To put it simply, what SS is trying to say is that if your picture does not appear there, you are somewhat less committed than other members.Wah.Honestly, is this a communist website?If it is,I guess we all have to be forced to be committed, hence all the pictures like the obituaries page on Straits Times.A better way to appreciate the commitments contributed rather,is to bring them out for a hearty zhi-cha dinner,or say maybe a cold beer or such.I believe this is much better than just words "thank you for contributing to this concert arh, i appreciate it" I bet,the members will definitely feel more appreciated."The best way to a man's heart is thru his stomach" Heard of this phrase before?Well..it kind of appears to be true here.Heh.Seriously.

And lastly, u bunch of low life suckers,please sell half a book, thats all u ever need to sell.Just 5 tickets.Is it that hard?

Karen: if there's 99 members, u'll put 99 "heads" on the site? I dont see it as a necessary need to waste a webpage. It would be appropriate if it's for a quartet or quintet grp instead.

Thank you Karen for putting forth such a post.

Firstly, let me say that I've done a lot of field work and research before I started punching in the first code of the website. The research saddened me somewhat.

In most of the websites which I went through, each band member occupied at most a line in the players' list, and many bands boasted of their achievements, their histories, where they went on tour, what awards they obtained etc...all of which would not have happened without the most important entity of all - you. The people Time magazine labelled as the Person[s] of the Year.

Yes you. All of you, who are members of the Toa Payoh South CC Moulmein Wind Symphony who come in every Sunday afternoon because you want to make music together in a close-knit group.

It is you who make the band what it currently is - and without you, the band would not have kept going until today. Without you, the band would not be able to make music. Without you, however illustrious the band was would ring hollow if there were no current band members to reap the fruits of labour which were nurtured by the people before you.

"If it does not breathe, it does not matter."

Thus, it is my belief that each and every one of you, current band members, should be given a photograph to match your name. If there are 99 members then yes, there should be 99 "heads". Players are not mere lines of letters - you are alive human beings with real faces and real names, giving us your real commitment. And the best way we exco members can do to reciprocate is to credit you for doing just that by recognising that you are more than a mere name in the "Players' List" web page and programme booklet.

C, E-flat, and G go into a bar.

The bartender says, "Sorry, but we don't serve minors."

So, the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between them.

After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished; the G is out flat. An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

A D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse me. I'll just be a second."

An A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor.

Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and exclaims, "Get out now! You're the seventh minor I've found in this bar tonight."

The E-flat, not easily deflated, comes back to the bar the next night in a 3-piece suit with nicely shined shoes.

The bartender says: "You're looking sharp tonight, come on in! This could be a major development."

This proves to be the case, as the E-flat takes off the suit, and everything else, and is now au naturel.

Eventually, the C sobers up, and realizes in horror that he's under a rest.

Trip to Genting (G) Changed to KL

The trip to G will be changed to KL - after much discussion with members that are going for this trip, it is decided that we wil be heading to KL on the FRI 23RD NOV. We will return to SG on the Sunday 25TH NOV. In other words, its 3D2N event.

Reasons why we didnt choose G:

1.Standard of living there is costlier when compared to 3D2N at KL.
2.Monsoon season approaching in NOV, rides will be cancelled due to Fog/Bad Weather.
3.Not much activities to do there compared to KL.

Here's a simple estimated cost of the trip to KL:
[All calcualtions in RM]

25 - Bus ride to KL
50 - Accomodation/pax/nite
150 - Expenditure
50 - Train ride back SG

275 = Total cost

Given the current 2.2 times SG currency value against the RM, u will need to bring roughly [ 275 / 2.2 = 125SG Dollars ]

A safe estimate will be to bring SG$150, or if u wish to do more shopping or spend lavishly, bring according to wat u feel like. So long as each person has sufficient to pay for Transport, food and Lodging, I have no issues.

Please note, since the its the season of travelling, we will need to get our Bus tix way in advance, probably a day or 2 before the event. This is to ensure that everyone gets a tix at the above mentioned price. However, based on my experience, we mite need to pay a little more if we do not have tix to purchase. But fret not, i wll try my best to make sure that the price stays the same. Purchasing the bus tix means that u guys will have to fork out an equivalent of 25RM when we purchase the tix ( awww...i noe the look on ur faces now..but then..life's a bitch.Move on!) Please see to that faithfully, alrite mate?

The next MWS Band Practice session is at TPSCC at 1pm-4pm...but this next session will be sectionals.

Just to reaffirm what we went through this afternoon, the pieces to work out for Mirificus are:

1. Mont Blanc
2. Symphonic Overture
3. Riverdance
4. Nerval's Poems
5. The Woman in White

As you know, sectionals are the most effective occasions for mistakes to be ironed out to facilitate more efficient and enjoyable full band sessions. I'm sure all of us have at least something to work on inside all 5 of these pieces - which will occupy at least 3 hours' of hard work, so gambatte ne!

Hi everyone, band practice resumes on Sunday 5 Aug 2007 1pm-4pm at Toa Payoh South CC #02-13/14. Be there or be SS! =p

Latest news during this lull period:

We have advertised for woodwind players in sgbandfusion, and I hope that everyone is mentally geared up for Mirificus 2007.

The website development progress is going slowly but surely, and I am rushing to get something up by December.

In the meantime, please be as diligent as you have always been in turning up for band practice sessions, for I am sure that it is our dream to put up another good show and do ourselves proud as a band. :-)

Do We Have A BHAG?

Hello everyone,

I was in the metro [MRT is a very Singaporean term] when I was talking to a band member whom I had lost contact with for a very long time. And when he heard that I was in Moulmein Wind Symphony, he commented [inexact quote], "What? I can't believe you guys are still in the band scene after so many years!"

Yes, this band has struggled against all the odds to survive, thanks to a lot of people who have persevered before I joined in 2006, and it is thanks to a lot of the same people who still continue to give their all for the band.

Plenty of members in our band have been in the music scene for years, and have aspirations to take the band to a higher level than it is today. It is my pleasure to be able to obtain the opportunity to serve the band in the capacity of an exco member. I know many of you have closet dreams and aspirations which you have always wanted to achieve as a musician. I have some of those too.

While flipping through one of my numerous books, I came across a book which describes how organisations succeed. One of the key tenets of these organisations' successes is for the leadership of the organisation to set up a vision known as a BHAG.

BHAG stands for Big Hairy Audacious Goal, and it is

clear and compelling, serves as unifying focal point of effort, and acts as a clear catalyst for team spirit. It has a clear finish line, so the organization can know when it has achieved the goal; people like to shoot for finish lines." (Collins and Porras, 1996).

Examples of what a BHAG (personally, I feel the Wikipedia entry shows not-very-good examples of BHAGs) which I can come up with are

- To come away with the highest award for the best band during WMC 2008
- To cut our very own first wind band album before 2020
- To have an around-the-world concert tour before 2020
- To become a professional wind band which offers scholarships to promising players who are unable to find the means to study music
- ...

It may seem like wishful thinking now, and probably some of you are laughing at me for dreaming. Yes, perhaps I may be dreaming. Yet, I hold the hope that plenty of you hold dreams of yourself which you do not dare say out loud, for fear of being mocked by people older than you.

In his stirring commencement speech, Steve Jobs mentioned how his friend and himself managed to turn a humble startup in a garage into a US$2bn business. Fred Smith's lecturers did not think much of his Yale term paper, but he persevered with his own convictions and set up the wildly successful Federal Express. Closer to home, Sim Wong Hoo's business started from a computer repair shop in Pearl Centre. As can be shown, dreams do come true - given the courage to reach for them.

I would like to think that there are plenty of people in the band who are far younger than I am, and harbour big dreams for themselves as band musicians.

Basically, we can continue to be where we are now - and as I face you every week, I know that plenty of you have the hunger to want to take the band forward to greater heights. I know that many of you have had the privilege of playing in bands which have had a fantastic reputation and background. I know that many of you want to play a lot of classic wind band pieces which even professional bands have trouble perfecting - the tagboard shows disappointment galore when fantastically-scored band pieces were taken out.

To play those pieces, it takes a lot of discipline in terms of individual practice, getting to know one another as fellow band players, knowing when to give way to other sections and soloists, and even knowing how to stick together no matter how good [or bad!] the conductor is. Thanks, sTuPiD =). I am still striving to make myself a better baton-wielder, and I am sure that you are striving to make yourself a better player as I type.

Similarly, while is admirable that we have survived in a place in Singapore, where many people eschew participation in the performing arts after leaving school, here are some questions for thought.

1. Where are we now?

2. Where do we want to move on from here?

And...

3. What will your BHAG for Moulmein Wind Symphony be, everyone? Or is it time to slap me awake from the dream I have for our band? =)

Post-Concert Netiquette

Hello fellow performers,

Concert is taking place in less than 24 hours' time. At this juncture, I feel that, given that some of us are not experienced performers, it is important to highlight a few things here:

1. Expect imperfections.

Good old Murphy always makes his appearance when least desired. This is not making any excuses for our performance later [every one of us did practise hard, right?], but it is a matter of life. There are many concerts which I have been a part of. There are some which I felt the bands I took part in performed better than average, but there are also others where the bands fell apart midway through a piece.

Never mind about us, most of us who are non-professionals. Even professional musicians like Beethoven have had their forgettable concerts.

Whatever individual mistakes we may make later on stage at 7:30pm, I'm sure most of us are honest enough to raise our hands and acknowledge that.

Like life, there are no second opportunities to re-play a note that you have missed. Don't beat yourself over that little note.

2. Enjoy yourselves.

Making music is supposed to be a fun activity, but playing notes is not. It's very easy to make notes, but it's very hard to make music. And to make music, you must put yourself in the right mood to do so. Some of the pieces which we are playing demand us to be aggressive, others require us to be gentler, and yet others demand us to put ourselves in the shoes of other cultures.

And it is very very hard to put yourselves in the right mood unless your mood is relaxed. I guess I don't need to remind you to take your making music seriously, right? :-)

3. Expect criticism.

This concert is a performance which anyone from the general public can view and listen, and people will be comparing us with other bands which they have heard. In this day and age where IT is such a common means of interaction between people, some members of the audience will no doubt be putting their thoughts of our concert on their blogs.

When people are behind their keyboards, giving their honest opinions about our concert, some of them will be negative, unfair, malicious and/or scathing. Others will criticize certain aspects of the performance - or even certain players or sections.

I appeal to all of you to remember that you are representing Moulmein Wind Symphony on stage in this concert. As a result, no matter whether you are a guest player, member or even exco member, any defensive retorts from you in cyberspace will be fully judged by everyone who gets to read it - and remember - the customer is always right.

As such, it is important to conduct yourselves in a professional manner no matter how unwarranted you feel the post-concert criticism we may get are. Please do not flame any of our critics, especially in cyberspace! Chances are that you will not be able to convert them and it could eventually lead to a flame war between the honest critic and yourself - and I'm sure all of you know how flame wars end.

Instead, prove to them that we can put up a better show next time round if you think that they are being harsh, nasty or unfair, and their blog entries on our performances will collapse onto themselves.

[To all members of the public, please note that the exco of this band explicitly, unambiguously and categorically does not approve of members disrespecting their audience in cyberspace, no matter what you say about us. You paid good money out of your own pocket to watch us, and because of that, you are fully entitled to rip the tickets in our faces, rant about how badly we sound to your friends or over the blogosphere if you don't like what you hear, and, if you are even nasty enough, hail rotten eggs right into my direction (and not anybody else's) because I am responsible for a large part of the concert - i am the concert master.]

Although we can never please everybody, we have tried our best to put up a good show, and that should be the only thing on our minds after the concert today.

[To all members of the public (2), if we did well, please congratulate us; and if we didn't, please be honest about that too, ok? We welcome all honest feedback.]

After which, please remember that there is a band chalet to go to from the 27th to the 29th of June 2007 inclusive, so please do try to come along, enjoy the food and drinks, and share your thoughts on playing in Moulmein, yes?

Hello everyone,

It's 9 days left to the concert, and I hope that you're doing your best for it, like practising and selling the tickets?

Remember, the concert is only as good as you want it to be...and the concert hall is only as full as you strive for it to be so.

Please work hard so that we can keep the standard of the band going, shall we? This band has gone through much trial and tribulations throughout the past few years, and every band member's part depends on everyone else's to thrive.

We may have to make some drastic changes to the way things are played - so please make it an effort to come down the coming Saturday and Sunday, alright?

Please prepare some writing materials by your side - we have some balancing issues to address this weekend [especially for the pieces I am taking].

Thanks to everyone for making his/her way to the CC for practice throughout all these weeks, and in terms of running jargon, we have come around the bend and are approaching the final straight. I hope that all our effort in practising for this upcoming concert will have finally paid off on June 23rd. :-)

Additionally, any members who wish to practise in his/her spare time in the CC is free [and encouraged!] to locate anyone in the band who knows how to draw the keys and open the cupboard to gain access to his/her instruments.

Ambience for Mont Blanc

Hello everyone,

A segment of Mont Blanc requires us to simulate a morning ambience. What does it mean? Few of us have been there, so the Internet is the best resource for information on that.

For some inspiration, I have provided the links.

1. A poem about Mont Blanc.

2. The more obvious flora and fauna in the region include Chamois (a goat-like animal), Ibex (another type of goat), Golden Eagle, Marmots(a type of squirrel), Wild Orchids, Gentians, Edelweiss, etc. Although some areas are now classified as protected nature reserves, tourism and local economic development create ever more significant impact to these environments.

So when we rehearse the piece, please remember to let your imagination run freely, but reasonably :-). If I find any sound clips of these animals [or, better, Mont Blanc itself], I shall put these up here.

I heard some nice misic while the band was playing last practice. Hope everyone keeps it up tomorrow when I'm not present - I have a performance to crack at 5pm on Sunday and the band I'm playing in has rehearsals before that from 12 noon onwards.

Meanwhile, we have had some ideas from you about what theme we shall adopt for our next concert, and we shall go over them all before coming to a conclusion about the theme itself.

Again, well done last practice! :-) But there is still a lot of room to improve between now and the upcoming concert, so please work hard at your individual parts. Thanks!

After a careful and drawn-out discussion, the exco would like to try out something new this year.

We are going to draw up a theme for Scherzo this year, Mirificus [in December 2007] as well as Scherzo in June(2008), and we would want to obtain some good ideas from you.

The theme would define the pieces which we shall look to perform in the concert.

What is a theme? We hear you ask. Examples:

some important news

1) Mr Lin will be coming back to conduct us every Sunday till the concert starting from 4 mar 2007 , sorry that we took such a long time, and we are good to go

2) we shd have a outdoor performance either on the first Saturday of April or May, depending on our ACM Regina to book the slot for performance at the amphitheater near HDB Hub.

3) the concert had been confirmed by the CCMC

therefore we need everyone cooperation, i koe everyone is having exams and lotsa of problems, but we the ex-co and the other band members who came for band prac are willing to sacrifice our precious time off for band prac . Thoughts for Practice on Feb 11

Hello everyone,

Thank you for being so responsive towards what I had asked from you. :-) Expression is what defines a good band from an ordinary one. Entry is what defines an ordinary band from a good one.

I hope to have struck the point that for slow pieces, it is not just about getting the notes technically right. It is more than that - namely you have to shape the melody especially for slow passages.

I understand that my warm-ups are rather long and tedious, but I promise you that this is the best way to improve technically - to practise all your scales and technical exercises the way I always start every warm-up session. It is like driving a car - you have to warm up the engine first before experiencing a smooth journey.

This is the best way to go about improving everyone's technique - to work on your technical exercises as a team. It's much more fun doing things together as a group. :-) Therefore, please do come for full band on time to work on your technique as a group.

I am very gratified to know that pieces which we had previously used to sight-read are now starting to sound together as a unit. But that's only the start - the end product - when we manage to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together and play to the audience - will be impressive if everyone puts in his/her effort.

I will also re-produce the "Themes" posting and date it on the 10th of March so that you can have a quick think about it and submit more themes to give us good ideas for the concert.

Additionally, I am going to appeal to all of you: We need more percussionists...as well as more instruments except the trombones, tubas and saxophones. Please do ask more people from these sections to come down for practice. Thank you!!

Last Practice was rather fine, and thanks Kenneth and the saxes for saying that the pieces are too similar in that they are all compilations of some way or other.

I shall bring down single pieces for 18 Feb 2007, and till then please bear with me.

Due to the fact that there are only 2 months away to the concert in June, I have decided to bring some more challenging pieces to try out.

One of them is a moving piece, with some nice saxophone and flute solos, and the other has a substantial oboe solo as well. Hopefully these will give you some inspiration on the themes which we intend to come up with for the future three large-scale concerts.

Ok hello fellow musicians,

Due to logistics considerations, I have decided to cancel "Concerto d'Amore" as well as "Bayou Breakdown". It is down to one word: Chimes.

As a discussion within the exco has decided that it would be in everyone's interests not to have the chimes deployed for the performance, the discussion on the repertoire today has been changed to such - and two of the pieces which we had decided have been scrapped.

4. I Believe I Can Fly

As you can see, the pieces are all slow ones...I am going to bring faster pieces down tomorrow - thanks Kenneth for pointing it out. :-)

Actually, we had tried out some rather interesting fast pieces, but general consensus was that we need to discuss the suitability of these pieces next practice when more people turn up.

As a deputy prime minister is a guest-of-honour for one of our performances, I hope that everyone will still continue to roll up their sleeves and work hard for the upcoming assignments for this band.

Naturally, we need to prepare a fanfare for that and we'll be trying out that for tomorrow. It's called "Fanfare No. 1". Can't find a youtube recording of it though :p.

Also, please keep your ideas for concert themes coming - the more the merrier!

Practice Thoughts for Sun 21 Jan 2007

Hello all, Sorry for the delay - I have been snowed under by work of late - and searching for new pieces takes up a rather large amount of time.

I have a very hard choice to make at the moment. Owing to instrumentation problems with the percussion section, I am deliberating over whether I should scrap Bayou Breakdown for the performances in March and April. This will, of course, also depend on how well-prepared all individual sections are.

I think you will agree with me that the current standard is not up to mark, although I certainly want the band to play and enjoy a piece as fun as this, where all sections have their limelight now and then. However, there are some sections which have members who are just coming back from [mostly] academic work, or from sorting out their personal stuff. I hope that you know where you stand in terms of preparedness after the extended workout on Bayou Breakdown last week, and for the laggards, please practise hard to catch up with others who have been committing 3 hours of their precious time for the past three consecutive weeks.

I do believe that three hours per week is not too much to ask for from each of you. All of you may have school projects to rush, and are busy for one reason or another. But that's the same for everyone else who, without fail, come down to practise every week. I hope that no matter what happens, you shall do your best to come down for practice fully prepared.

When I mean "fully prepared", I mean that you will have shown signs that you have practised your parts for the pieces. While taking into account the fact that some of you may have only seen "Bayou Breakdown" for the first time, I would like to explain that the piece is made up of quavers as well as a few syncopated notes here and there. Thus, you should be able to play it competently with constant practice.

I shall bring down more pieces for the coming week to try out, and I hope that you will tell the other band members who have not been coming for band to attend practice sessions consistently. Thanks.

Quick thoughts on January 14, 2006 and for January 21, 2006

Ciao a tutti,

While it is pleasing to know that we can perform Concerto d'Amore competently well, there is still plenty of polishing to be done to get the parts to sound good, especially the slower parts.

Pieces confirmed for the repertoire include:

1. Bayou Breakdown (approx 5 mins)
2. Concerto d'Amore (approx 7 mins)

As the general public is going to hear us for the concert in March, I am trying to bring more contemporary pieces to play with i.e. pieces which place more emphasis on tone and expression rather than technique.

I am currently considering some movie theme music compilations [two or three, pending availability of scores] as well as throwing in two light pieces, plus one more piece which belongs to band repertoire - either a dance or a concert march.

I hope to see all of you on Sunday. Thanks for the people who came to practise...and for those who didn't, please do join us soon when your other commitments are over.

Ciao A Tutti,

This Sunday (7th January 2007), we shall be trying out new pieces:

1. Danse Diabolique by Joseph Hellmesberger (trans. Tohru Takahashi)
2. The Olympics: A Centennial Celebration by John Williams (arr. John Moss)

...and a third piece to try out.

This piece is written in a fugue-like manner, featuring solo segments of nearly every wind instrument, from the bass clarinets, to the trumpets, to the french horns down to the tubas. It's not often that modern 21st century pieces are written in such a manner.

As such, attendance is vital for everyone to try it out and consequently decide if we can pull it off.

TPS-MWS welcome players now to join on a permenament basic, we do not require any auditions for now but one would had to undergo a short interview session before we allow players to join our band now.

Scherzo 2006

Dear All,

Our debut concert's over, and I've received many encouraging feedback from our audience. I quote an ex-member:

"The first piece came with a Bang and I went "WOW". Amazing sound and expression for the Hanover Overture. Most expression and tone colour are well presented. It came with a Bang, seriously. Dear Mr vice president of the band, don't worry so much lah, the sound is great and the tempo is comfortable for 95% of the time. Things are looking good. And the pieces are well received. I think some pieces are even better than what we (another band) played."

Considering the fact that we're not well prepared at all and the fact that we're only 3 months old, I'm rather pleased with the performance. I would like to congratulate you guys on our results.

I would also like to take this opportunity and thank a few of us for our efforts:

Mr Lin, for his utmost patience tolerating a lack of instrumentation and a less than desired rehearsal room; for his precious time on a Sunday afternoon; for his
believing in us. Thank you for your trust in us.

Mr Ivan Ching, Mr Edward Tan and Mr Kelvin Koh for their perseverance. MWE would have been long disbanded if not for these three individuals, and I would not have the chance to form MWS. Thank you all for hanging on. I believe we're going to make it this time. =)

Peiling, for her ernomous amount of help provided - for the production of all the tickets (done by herself); for the production of all the programme booklets (done by herself also); for the recollection of tickets and revenue (done by herself still); for her help rendered despite the absence of obligations (she is not a committee member). Thank you for your altruistic behavior.

Chin Kee, the assistant librarian, for handling the entire workload of the librarian - for the replication of scores on demand; for his precious weekend time (he's in the army) spent on band practices and the management of our library; for his help rendered beyond the scope of his appointment. Thank you for your great help.

Kaiboon, the quartermaster, for his overwhelming enthusiasm - for single handedly managing the inventory of MWS; for doing an excellent job in doing so; for spending extra time out of band to perfect his job. Thank you for your passion.

Jeffrey, our logistics officer, for the planning of logistic matters involved in the concert.

Eileen, for covering up most of the stuff some of us didn't do.

Mr Kenneth Lun, for taking time off on Sundays to join us in our voyage to musical excellence.

Last of all, to all those that I might have skipped unintentionally, thank you for your efforts. Not forgetting Si Ling, for her aodrable "bubblegum-ness" =D

This is only the beginning. I apologise for the lack of instruments and accessories. We'll have to work harder in time to come, before the CC is willing to pump cash into us. Good news is, preliminary "scout info" has revealed that the CC management committee, who attended the concert, were impressed with our performance. We're already on our way people. We can do it!

I've not forgotten about the ongoing learning that we have promised. However, please be prepared to pay a little. We're still very poor at the moment. We'll engage tutors and come up with an arrangement some time this June or July. Do not worry. We will try our best to keep low the fees that each of you have to come up with, if your section wants a tutor.

As mentioned, practice resumes on 23rd April tentatively. Please continue to come for practices. We've got another round of auditions coming up and 2 public performances coming up in june and july. Monitor this space for updates!

Below is the finalised list of players for Scherzo 2006. If your names are not in there or if there're any mistakes, please let me know by 17/03/06 (this Friday). I'll be handing this list to the person in charged of printing the program booklet this Friday.

SLs please take responsibility in checking. I've emailed you your section's members' particulars for a good reason. Fill up all, yes all, the blanks. Members whose address field and house number field are not given will not be eligible for the borrowing of our instruments. Quartermaster please note.
